Chapter 8 Something Great
The highest intelligence on earth, however, may be the collective intelligence of all life forms on earth. Jung, the psychologist, expressed the idea of collective unconscious in his psychological theory. According to Jung, human beings possess, apart from personal unconscious, what he called collective unconscious that is common to all human beings on earth. He explained symbols, rituals, traditions and myths that are common worldwide as the result of such collective unconscious being projected on to each.
A phenomenon we call synchronicity is brought about by the collective unconscious of human beings.
Could this collective unconscious be the very collective intelligence that is also the intelligence of the earth? But the collective unconscious that Jung proposed applies only to human beings. In Jung's times, no one thought of animals has having intelligence. But now, it is known that many animals do possess intelligence that is higher than we all imagine. Whenever we consider the collective unconscious, we are now expected to include animals as well.
One example is whaling. While Japan and Norway demand it, the worldwide current is aiming to prohibit it. Could it be that whales' unconscious are being reflected upon the collective unconscious? Besides, many of the projects performed by human beings, such as space development, massive civil engineering project and charities, in fact, may be the very products arising from the collective unconscious.
There's a long time question that has been asked. "What to humans live for?"
Even such question can be easily answered if we think of humans as a part of the Living Earth. Humans are given their lives solely for the purpose to develop the Living Earth, and such activities that humans seem to perform on their own initiative, are, in fact, actions that are forced in order to fulfill the collective unconscious. We are talking about the intelligence of the earth. Some may wonder why intelligence could be unconscious?
It may be unconscious for human beings. But for earth, it may not be so. For example, enterobacteria would never know of human's consciousness, but they unconsciously aid our digestion. The levels of consciousness are so far apart that humans merely can't perceive the collective intelligence. In the same light, humans may regard collective unconscious as earth's intelligence.
But there are times when such humans become aware of the intelligence that somehow seems to belong to another dimension. On such occasion, people may call collective unconscious that is also the collective intelligence as GOD or SOMETHING GREAT.
