The Aborigines
Part 8

An isolated continent

The Australian continent is filled with unique and distinctive animals such as the koala, kangaroo and duckbill platypus. The first humans arrived Australia some 70,000 years ago during the Pleistocene. This was also during the glacial epoch known as the Würm and the surface of the sea was much lower than that of today.

For that reason, there was a wide landmass called Sunderland where the Southeast Asian islands are located today . And Australia was connected to New Guinea forming a continent called Sahulland.

Some literature on Australian history explain "people migrated to Australia from the Asian continent that became connected during the glacial period". But such statement is a big mistake. It should be amended to "É that became nearly connected." These two continents, even 20,000 years ago when the sea surface was at a record low, were thought to be have separated by a strait stretching for at least 80km.

This can be seen from the fact that there existed a clear boundary of fauna and flora called the Wallace's Line between the two continents. This also explains the reason why animals with primitive features such as marsupials and monotremes were able to survive in Australia. Therefore migration in to Australia couldn't have been possible without using "a boat".

Can you believe that 70,000 years ago, during the time when the Neanderthals and Archaic Homo sapiens were at the height of prosperity, there existed people crossing the ocean using boats or rafts?

Who could be the people that immigrated to Australia by making full usage of the most advanced technology of its time?
